Tip 20. It may be time to go jump in the lake.

Once upon a time there was a small, successful company that built roof trusses.

One day, the sales manager and owner of the company were discussing company operations. As usual, the sales manager was in a huff and complaining about one of the salesmen who was giving him trouble again. “That darn Hansen told me to go jump in the lake. Can you believe that?” roared the sales manager. “What are you going to do about that?”

“Is he a good salesman?” asked the owner. “Yeah, kind of” stuttered the sales manager.

“Out of our fifty salespeople, what percent of the sales is he responsible for?” “Fifty-one percent” mumbled the Sales Manager.

With that the owner jumped up, grabbed his hat and bolted for the door. “Hey, where are you going?” yelled the sales manager.

“To jump in the lake,” replied the owner.

Are you clear who your main producers are? If so, are you really taking care of them?

My dad, a small business owner and an all-around pretty smart guy used to tell my brother and me this story as kids.
