Tip 210. Have an exit strategy for a house fire.

Your house is on fire. Do you stop and think what you need to save, or just run for the nearest door—which you hope isn’t blocked?

Thirty years ago, you had thirty minutes to get out of a burning house. Today due to the furniture and building materials, you only have three to four minutes.

How do you get out if all of the doors are blocked? Do all of your windows open? Can you fit through them? Do you have a hammer next to one in your bedroom in case the pane is being a real pain and has decided not to open?

If you have a room on the second floor, do you have a rope ladder to the ground?

Have you practiced what to do with your kids? Do they know where to go? Remember, they only have three to four minutes to get out.

What do you take with you?

Now is the time to make a list (by the way, this list needs to consist of one thing) so you don’t have to stop and think what to save when your house is going super nova.

As Snagglepuss used to say: Heavens to Murgatroyd. Exit stage left. Door right.
