What do you do when you pick up something on your desk and don’t know what to do with it?

You place it on:

• Your credenza.

• A pile on your desk.

• A spot on the floor—but off to the side, of course.

• Under your desk where no one can see it.

• All of the above.

• None of the above. You just stand there with it in your hand, frozen like a deer in a car’s headlights.

The next time you mindlessly plop down a piece of paper, stop, take a deep breath, and make a decision as to where it goes. You’ll be amazed at how clean your desk will stay by making a simple decision—and how focused your mind will be.

Warning: Making decisions can be painful, especially when you are not in the habit of making them. But boy, it sure feels good after you do—and your office doesn’t look too shabby either.
